How do you compare to others?

In life, most of us gauge our own success in comparison to others.  Ever since we were kids, we have wondered who is better at this or that, who has more, who is more popular, etc.  These ideas are based on the fact that we naturally want to be the best.  But everyone is different.  Everyone is raised differently, in different environments, and has different experiences.  We are also innately different from birth.  Two children, even twins raised in the same environment by the same parents, are not equal.

So, what is the point of comparing yourself to other people?  That depends.  One useful way to compare yourself is to look to other successful people to understand that goals are achievable and that things that may seem out of reach are actually attainable.  In this way, we have role models, heroes, and people who inspire us to reach for more.  This is a positive way to compare ourselves against others, as it helps us set higher goals and work harder to achieve them.

Comparing yourself to others to decide who you think is better is counterproductive.  Since we all have different strengths and weaknesses, deciding who is better at something is not always accurate, and does not mean that one person is a better person than another.  Plus, we all have a bias when deciding that we are the best.  If we aren't the best, we often feel that things are harder for us or easier for someone else, making us still better in our own minds.  This type of comparison does not benefit anyone and may actually cause damage as it will most often produce a false sense of reality and give reasons for excuses.

We should try to compare ourselves only to ourselves.  We should compare who we are to who we are capable of being.  If we aren't fulfilling our potential, the fault is our own.  Only we can work harder to improve who we are.  Oftentimes, people look for reasons why they are not successful.  Instead, we need to look to find ways that we can be successful.  If we can find ways to overcome challenges and advance toward our goals instead of using them to give a reason for not reaching our goals, we will be more successful and have a greater chance of reaching our full potential.

We are all capable of achieving greatness if we strive to be the best we can be, regardless of what everyone else is doing.
